K-1 Lesson Plans

These lesson plans are best suited to children in Kindergarten or 1st Grade. They cover essential economic topics appropriate for children ages 5 to 6.

Strega Nona’s Abundance: Exploring Choices (Grade 1)

In this lesson, students will explore the concept of abundance through the story Strega Nona’s Harvest. They will discuss what it means to have all that we need and make decisions based on costs and benefits related to sharing excess goods. Using a choices cost-benefit chart, students will engage in hands-on activities to understand how Strega Nona’s choices impact her community.

Exploring Markets with Bluey (K-1)

This lesson introduces students to the concept of markets, emphasizing how buyers (consumers) and sellers (producers) interact to determine prices. Students will learn about the circular flow of money, where resources, goods, and currency continuously trade hands, fueling the economy. Using the Bluey episode “Markets,” students can see these ideas in action as Bluey and her friends simulate a marketplace, making trades and setting prices. After viewing, students will engage in a hands-on activity where they create their own mini-market, taking turns as buyers and sellers to reinforce concepts of trade, decision-making, and the flow of goods and services.
